The Chateau and Garden

Château Soussac is a magnificent 19th century chateau owned by Joe and Nell Beattie is set in 15 acres, 10 of which are the vineyard and the other 5 acres are a beautiful park with spectacular specimen trees and magnolias planted in 1850.
There is a pretty lake and a stunning lakeside pagoda, reached by foot bridge, where guests can enjoy an aperitif as they watch the sun go down over the vineyards of Entre Deux Mers. In the garden there is a large swimming pool and an orchard planted with peach, cherry and pear trees. Guests can wander through the park and gardens, and tour the vineyard. Château Soussac is in the pretty village of Soussac, just 30 minutes from both Sauternes and St. Emilion, and an hour and a half from the Cap Ferret and Arcachon on the coast.

Guests can enjoy the choice of five double/twin bedrooms, all en suite and all with wonderful views of the gardens and vineyard. Le Petit Verdot bedroom, named after the ancestral variety of vine planted in the Bordeaux region, and growing in part of the vineyard at Château Soussac, has a magnificent four poster bed. The Magnolia room, as well having a magnificent toile de jouy canopied large very comfortable, double bed, also has views over the enormous Magnolia grande flore tree which flowers through the summer.

The furniture at Château Soussac features formal French furniture and Irish and English Georgian pieces. The picture collection is an interesting mix of modern paintings by some of Ireland’s leading contemporary artists and ancestral portraits. Nell is the great, great niece of Sir Arthur Liberty, founder of the famous Liberty store in London and there are many interesting family portraits and Liberty memorabilia throughout the chateau.
There are many pleasures at Château Soussac for guests to enjoy, including a library which has over 1,500 books, both contemporary and antique, and a fine billiard room with a multi channel television. Children, of all ages, are very welcome at Chateau Soussac. Teenagers and smaller children all enjoy the swimming pool, and they make the most of the outdoor table tennis, boules and having the freedom to run around the park and explore the secret nooks and crannies provided by the large cedar trees. Delicious children’s menus are available and they are designed to suit each child’s favourite treats.
