Things to do in the area
There is an enormous variety of interesting and enjoyable things to do and sights to see within easy reach of Chateau Soussac. There is a wealth of maps, guide books and brochures at Chateau Soussac for guests to browse through, to help them plan their day and of course Nell and Joe are always on hand to suggest good places to visit to suit their guests' particular interests. See the list of events for this year at the end of this page.
The charming medieval village of Castel Moron d’Albret, France’s smallest village, is just 5 minutes away whilst the longest pedestrian shopping street in France is an hour away in Bordeaux.
And the incredible open air museum that is the town of St Emilion, one of the most famous wine towns in the world is just 30 minutes away. In between there are many activities to enjoy from golf, horse riding., canoeing on the Dordogne, fishing and swimming to wine tastings, bastide towns, historic roman churches, royal chateaux and mouth watering markets. The only difficult part is choosing which lovely place to visit or activity to enjoy.
Golf
T he Graves and Sauternais golf course is just 30 minutes from Chateau Soussac (we can lend you clubs). The shady tree lined parkland course makes this 18 hole golf course suitable for playing all year round.
Chateau Vigiers golf course is just 40 minutes away, near Bergerac. The beautiful chateau and large lake make stunning backdrops to this immaculately presented course.
Canoeing on the River Dordogne
S tart your boat trip at the pretty village of Pessac, just 15 minutes from Chateau Soussac. Drift (at your own speed) down the Dordogne and admire the chateaux not visible from the road while your wine cools in the watertight barrel (provided with the canoe) as it drifts behind you in the flowing waters of the Dordogne. Stop for lunch or enjoy a picnic on the riverbank and a swim in the river.
Horse riding
L es Ecuries de Gaudoux is a very professionally run riding stables 5 minutes from Chateau Soussac. They have a good selection of very well kept horses and ponies for all standards.
Walking and Rambling
O n your doorstep – you can wander for miles through the vineyards, around the nearby lakes, or take the shorter stroll up to the Butte de Launay – the highest point in Entre Deux Mers.
Villages and Roman Churches
T he bastide villages of Sauveterre de Guyenne, Monsegur, Blasimon and Pellegrue are all within minutes of Chateau Soussac. Enjoy a glass of wine in the arcades while you watch the life of these charming villages unfold. There are stunningly beautiful Roman churches in Blasimon and St. Ferme.
And there is a wealth of village fetes, wine festivals and musical events – both classical and contemporary – where you can join in the fun with the very friendly and hospitable people of Entre Deux Mers.
SPECIAL EVENTS
There is always something happening in the Gironde! Every day a different picturesque village has a market; Saint Foy La Grande’s market , just twenty minutes away, is rated as one of the top 100 prettiest markets in France. There is always a musical event, bric a brac fair or festival happening nearby. And in the summer months several local villages host their marche de nuits where there are several stalls selling an enormously wide variety of food and drink – just find a somewhere to sit, choose your choice of food and sit back, listen to the melodic live music and immerse yourself in real French village life – and don’t forget to join in the dancing!
2011 Event Diary
28th May to 5th JuneThe International Fair of Bordeaux. This is a gourmet’s delight. The range of food and beverages on offer is endlessly tempting and this gourmet fair is one of the largest in France.
18th and 19th JuneThe biannual Bordeaux River Festival. Two days of festivities and entertainment on the banks of the Garonne.
6th – 16th OctoberBiennial of Contemporary Art in Bordeaux
